DESCRIPTIONS FOR LINCOLN CENTS
Uncirculated: On the obverse - The details of Lincoln's hair, beard and features are sharp and clear. The lines of his coat, shirt and tie are distinct. One the reverse - the grains and parallel lines of the wheat stalk stand out sharply on the reverse.
Extremely Fine: On the obverse - the cheek and jaw bone are the highest points of the obverse design and show the first traces of wear. On the reverse - The lines of the wheat stalk are clear and distinct. There is slight wear on the inside row of grains.
Very fine: On the obverse - Definite wear shows in the hair around the ear. There is a smooth spot at the top of the ear. On the reverse - The lines of the stalk are plain but slightly smooth, and the grains of wheat near the top of the stalk are less distinct.
Fine: One the obverse - The ear shows considerable wear. The back and bottom edges are less distinct. The cheek and jawbone are fairly worn. On the reverse - The parallel lines of the stalk have smooth areas, particularily near the top of the left stalk. Each grain is visible but no longer sharply defined.
Very good: On the obverse - All fine detail is gone from the hair and beard. Only a rough outline of the ear is visible. The left end of the bow tie is only vague. On the reverse - Only portions of the parallel lines still show. The remaining portions are very faded.
Good: On the obverse - A very much worn coin. The hairline is indistinct. The area between the cheek and jaw bone is completely smooth and only a trace of an opening marks what remains of the ear. On the reverse - The lines of the wheat stalks are worn smooth. Only the vaguest outline of the grains can be seen.
Fair: On the obverse - Only the outline of Lincoln's head is visible. The outline even of the shirt and coat collar are worn smooth. On the reverse - The stalks are completely smooth. The rim of the coin is quite flat.
POOR: One the obverse - The coin in poor condition can be recognized as to date and mint but beyond that it may be pitted, corroded, dark or even bent. These minimum condition coins are generally unattractive. On the reverse - The rim is worn down even into the tops of the letters. A coin in poor condition is not worth collecting except possibly as a space filler for the rare dates.

About Uncirculated (AU-50) Has traces of light wear on many of the high points. Al least half of the mint luster is still present.
Choice About Uncirculated (AU-55) Barest evidence of light wear on only the highest points of the design. Most of the mint luster remains.
Uncirculated (MS-60) Has no trace of wear but may show a number of contact marks, and surface may be spotted or lack some luster.
Choice Uncirculated (MS-65) An above average Uncirculated coin which may be brilliant or lightly toned and has very few contact marks on the surface or rim. MS-67 through MS-62 indicate a slightly higher or lower grade of preservation.
Perfect Uncirculated MS-70) Perfect new condition, showing no trace of wear. The finest quality possible, with no evidence of scratches, handling or contact with other coins. Very few regular issue coins are ever found in this condition.
Mint State - The terms Mint State (MS) and Uncirculated (Unc.) are interchangeably used to describe coins showing no trace of wear. Such coins may vary to some degree because of blemishes, toning or slight imperfections as described in the following subdivisions.
PROOF - A specially made coin distinguished by sharpness of detail and usually with a brilliant mirrorlike surface.
Webster's Numismatics defined: (1878); the study of collection of coins, tokens, and paper money and sometimes related objects (as medals) -- numismatist.
